Community Assistance Day for Wagga Wagga residents

2 March 2020

Service NSW, the Department of Communities & Justice and the Energy & Water Ombudsman NSW (EWON) will host a Community Assistance Day in Wagga Wagga this week.

The event is a one-stop-shop for residents experiencing problems with their energy bills and related issues, with 15 services on hand to assist.

“Staff from energy retailers and EWON will listen to customers’ concerns, review their bills and try and resolve issues – on the spot if possible. We can also refer people to government agencies and community organisations at the event for support with health, housing, legal or financial problems and more,” Energy & Water Ombudsman NSW, Janine Young, explained.

EWON received 599 complaints from the Riverina region in 2018/2019 financial year, an increase of three percent from 2017/2018 – this is despite an overall fall one percent in complaints across NSW. The main complaints issues from the region related to billing, customer service and affordability.

“Customers can also get help setting up payment plans, accessing emergency payment assistance and any rebates they are eligible for,” Ms Young said.

The services taking part in the Community Assistance Day are Centrelink, Legal Aid, the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, NSW Department of Communities & Justice, NSW Fair Trading, the NSW Trustee and Guardian, Relationships NSW, Service NSW, the St Vincent de Paul Society, the Salvation Army, Wagga Family Support and the Women’s Health Clinic. Energy retailers Alinta Energy and Red Energy will also be there to assist their customers directly, while customers of other energy providers will be assisted by EWON.

Bring along current and past energy and water bills, letters from retailers and Centrelink Health and other concession cards.
