Here’s what you can do
This week’s announcement by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) that energy bills are set to rise by up to 18.3% in NSW will be concerning for many customers. Small business customers will also be affected by the changes, with standing offer prices rising by up to 13.5%.
A range of global and national factors have pushed energy prices upward and impacted the AER’s decision to raise the Default Market Offer (DMO). The war in Ukraine has increased coal and gas prices around the world, and recent extreme weather events in NSW and Queensland have increased electricity demand and pressure on coal supplies.
Together with broader concerns about the rising cost of living, the changes to the DMO could have a significant financial impact on many customers. If you’re worried about increases to your energy bill:
- Contact your retailer to discuss options for assistance. Retailers are legally required to help households who are struggling to pay their bills by offering repayment plans and hardship assistance. - Check if you’re eligible for Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA) vouchers by visiting the Service NSW website. From Monday 30 May 2022, the EAPA limit is increasing from $300 to $400 per quarter for energy or gas, meaning eligible NSW households could receive up to $1,600 per year to help pay their energy bill.
